General Lloyd J. Austin III, U.S. Army retired

Charlene Austin, Military spouse

General Austin retired in 2016 after serving more than 40 years in the U.S. Army. In his last role he served as Commanding General of all U.S. forces in the Middle East, including Iraq and Afghanistan, where he led 150,000 U.S. service members. General Austin was the first African-American officer to command an Army division and corps in combat and the first African-American leader of U.S. Central Command.

As a military spouse for more than 30 years, Mrs. Austin has worked extensively to help families across all military service branches.
